TY BACH COTTAGE
Andy Netley and Mandi O’Neill bought Ty Bach Cottage at auction in July 2000.
We’re not sure when Ty Bach was built but the earliest date shown on the house deeds is 1768. Like other properties in the area, might it have been part of the Beaufort Estate at one point?
In the 19th century, Edmund Jones and his descendants lived at Ty Bach and from around the 1870s it seems that a Reverend David Jones owned the property. In 1882, his daughter, Mary Caroline, sold the property to Isaac Thomas, Innkeeper, Llanishen – possibly The Carpenter’s Arms? Isaac died in 1916 and Ty Bach passed to his niece, Margaret Ethel Richards. In July 1938, George Williams of Church Farm, Llanfihangel Tor y Mynydd bought Ty Bach from Margaret Richards “for £1,000.00 – a little over 36 acres but excluding The Rectory Field. A Mr Musto was the tenant at the time of sale”. Steve Musto who owns the King’s Head in Usk is the grandson of this Mr Musto - and Steve is the step-dad of our landlord, Adam, at The Star On The Hill!
In the 1970s, Stuart and Avril moved into Ty Bach and Darren, Mikey and Nigel were brought up here. In 1993, Ty Bach was sold to Dr Christopher Jones and Melissa Smith when Avril and Stuart moved into the cow barn which they’d converted – this became Ty Bach Farm and the original house became Ty Bach Cottage.
The house itself has not been changed much structurally through the years. We still have the old staircase which is a bit rickety now. We uncovered the two original fireplaces when we moved in - these are very similar to the ones in The Star pub so we wondered whether they were built by the same person? And we’ve got the old flagstones in the front half of the house – not set into concrete but just sat on earth.

This photo shows Ty Bach in 1950 – it was sent to us by a family who were tenants at Ty Bach in the 1950s.
