Projects Group 21 years
The idea of creating a projects group for Llanfihangel Tor y Mynydd was first discussed by a local group of keen community minded residents. Far from being the usual pub chatter these discussions led to the formation of LlTyM Projects group at a formal meeting held in The Star in June 1998 with the declared aim of “raising funds for sustaining and promoting the community of LlTyM”.
The first organised event by the group was a hog roast held in July 1998 at The Star Inn under the careful guidance of the Inn keepers
Alan & Liz Evans.
So it was appropriate that on 6th July 2019 we celebrated our 21st Anniversary at the now

The Millennium: The unveiling of Miss Abercraf
On the 22nd of June 2000 Dale Hart unveiled the Millennium Stone weighing in at 6197 kilograms in front of over 80 parishioners. Dale had searched high and low to find a stone that met Alan Evans’ exacting specifications.

Getting Llanfihangel Tor y Mynydd back on the map.
In 1998 LlTyM had ceased to appear on Ordnance Survey Maps and, as there were no road signs, it had to all intents and purposes ceased to exist. The projects group met and decided on a plan to get us back on the map and recognise once again the hamlet of Llanfihangel Tor y Mynydd. So the fund raising commenced, events were keenly supported by the community with the result that by September 1998 £1545 had been raised. After prolonged negotiations with the Highways Department permission was eventually obtained to erect signs at three points on the parish boundary. The signs were purchased and erected by the group and unveiled by Huw Edwards MP on 13 September 2000 - LlTyM was on the map once more.

Some fund raising supports St Michael’s Church in Llanfihangel.
The Williams Family very generously donated a piece of land, adjacent to the church, to the parish. Drainage and surfacing was organised by the group to provide a car park. The projects group also raised significant sums for the restoration of the medieval church in the village which was undertaken in 2007-8. More recently the church roof timbers were all treated for rot and woodworm. The Victorian altar had all its embroidered inserts painstakingly conserved, and one faulty bell was restored to working condition.
Many national and international charities have also benefitted from Projects Group events.
An important early example was continuing support for the Umnqophiso Pre-Primary School in South Africa.
The school is now thriving and self sustaining but the relationship produced an interesting cultural exchange. The children promised to learn to pronounce Llanfihangel Tor y Mynydd if villagers learned to pronounce Umnqophiso! |
